Sixty-two lakh rupees. That was the final first-year figure for a student from Chitwan we sent to Coventry last September — tuition, visa, health surcharge, funds shown, flights, everything. Her father had budgeted forty, because a consultancy near his home had quoted him forty.
Twenty-two lakh is not a rounding error. It is the difference between a plan and a crisis in month three.
So let us do the arithmetic properly. The cost of studying in UK from Nepal has several layers, and the agencies that quote you only the tuition fee are not lying exactly — they are just leaving out half the invoice.
Tuition: what £12,000 to £18,000 buys
Most courses Nepali students take — business, computing, health and social care, engineering — charge international fees between £12,000 and £18,000 per year as of early 2026. Confirm the exact figure on the university’s own fee page before you sign anything, because fees creep up a little every intake.
Where you sit in that band depends on the university’s ranking and the course. A master’s at a modern university like our partner, the University of East London, sits near the lower end. Russell Group universities charge more, sometimes £22,000 and beyond. Lab-based science and clinical courses cost more than classroom subjects everywhere.
One honest note: for most careers, the £6,000 gap between a mid-table university and a famous one buys you very little. Employers on the Graduate Route care what you can do. Spend the difference on living well enough to focus, not on a crest for your CV.
The charges nobody quotes you first
Two costs surprise almost every family in our counselling sessions.
The Immigration Health Surcharge, or IHS, is £776 per year of your visa, paid upfront with the application. A one-year master’s visa actually covers around sixteen months, so expect to pay roughly £1,035. That is NHS access — no separate insurance needed — but it is real money: about 1.8 lakh rupees.
The visa fee itself runs around £490. Add the TB test at the IOM centre in Kathmandu, document attestation, courier charges, the NOC from Keshar Mahal, and a one-way flight, and you have spent 3 to 4 lakh before touching tuition.
London or outside London?
For the visa, you must show living funds of £1,334 per month for London and £1,023 per month elsewhere, for nine months. But the visa figure is the floor, not the forecast.
In reality, a shared room in London costs £700–£950 a month. In Coventry, Sunderland or Leicester, £400–£550 buys the same thing. Over a year that difference alone is 6 to 8 lakh rupees. Food, transport and the occasional momo craving scale the same way.
Our blunt advice: unless your course genuinely exists only in London, study outside it. Same degree, same Graduate Route afterwards, dramatically less pressure on your family and on your part-time earnings.
The first year in NPR, all in
Here is the full first-year picture for a master’s outside London, converted at early-2026 exchange rates. Check the rate the week you pay — the rupee’s movement against the pound can shift this total by two or three lakh on its own.
- Tuition: £13,000–£15,000 → 24–28 lakh NPR
- IHS: about £1,035 → 1.8 lakh NPR
- Visa fee: about £490 → 90,000 NPR
- Living funds to show: £9,207 → around 17 lakh NPR
- Flights, TB test, documents, initial setup: 3–4 lakh NPR
Total: roughly 55 to 70 lakh rupees for year one. London pushes it to 65–80. That is the honest cost of studying in UK from Nepal, and any quote far below it deserves suspicion.
Two softeners. First, the living funds are shown, not spent — that money travels with you and pays your actual rent and food. Second, students can work up to 20 hours a week in term time, and £10–£12 an hour covers a decent share of living costs. It will not cover tuition. Anyone who tells you it will is selling something.
How Nepali families actually pay
Most of our families fund UK study with an education loan against property — land or a house — from a Nepali bank. Banks lend for this readily, but the process takes longer than people expect: valuation, sanction, disbursement. Start the conversation with your bank manager three or four months before your intake, not three weeks.
And remember the 28-day rule: the funds must sit untouched in the account for 28 consecutive days before the visa application. A loan disbursed in mid-July cannot support an early-August application. This single piece of timing wrecks more September plans than any rejection letter.
Scholarships exist — most universities give Nepali students an automatic international discount of £1,000–£3,000, and some offer more for strong grades from TU or KU. Treat scholarships as a bonus, never as the plan.
Before you decide anything expensive
The Chitwan family from the top of this piece made it work, in the end. We rebuilt the budget honestly, they extended the loan against a second plot, and their daughter chose Coventry over London — which alone saved eight lakh. She now covers her own living costs from a part-time job.
That is the conversation to have before you pay anyone a single rupee. Bring your real numbers to any Start Education branch — Putalisadak, Butwal, Banepa or Ghorahi — and we will build your actual first-year budget line by line, free. More than 4,000 students have gone through this exercise with us since 2018. Start with our UK study guide, then book a free counselling session or call +977 01-4012658.
Budget on the real numbers. Month three in a foreign country is a terrible time to discover the quote was fiction.
