GIC Canada: How Nepali Students Open One from Nepal

How Nepali students open a GIC for Canada — the current amount near C$20,635, which banks accept Nepal, NRB transfer limits, and mistakes that delay visas.

C$20,635. As of early 2026, that is the number standing between most Nepali students and a Canadian study permit — roughly twenty lakh Nepali rupees, sitting in a Canadian bank account before your visa is even decided.

It is called a GIC, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate, and it causes more last-minute panic in our offices than any other single document. Not because it is complicated in theory. Because moving that much money out of Nepal involves your bank, the Nepal Rastra Bank, a Canadian bank you have never dealt with, and a deadline — and each of those can eat weeks if you sequence them badly.

This is the GIC Canada guide Nepali students actually need: what it is, the current numbers, and where files from Kathmandu, Butwal and everywhere else genuinely go wrong.

What a GIC actually is

A GIC is a deposit you place with a Canadian bank before you travel. It proves to the visa officer that your first year’s living costs exist, in Canada, in your name. The money is not a fee. It comes back to you.

After you land, the bank releases an initial portion — typically around C$2,000 or so — and pays the rest back in monthly or bi-monthly instalments across your first year. Think of it as a forced living allowance. For an eighteen-year-old alone in Brampton for the first time, that structure is honestly a feature, not a bureaucratic annoyance.

The required amount tracks Canada’s official cost-of-living figure. It jumped sharply in 2024 and has been revised since; C$20,635 is the figure we are working with as of early 2026, but confirm the current number on the bank’s own page before you deposit a rupee. Quebec runs different figures again.

Which banks accept students from Nepal

Several Canadian banks and platforms run GIC programs open to Nepali applicants — Scotiabank’s Student GIC Program, ICICI Bank Canada, SBI Canada Bank, and CIBC among the commonly used ones. Availability shifts, and some institutions pause new accounts during peak season, so check what is open when you apply rather than relying on a friend’s experience from two years ago.

The process runs roughly the same everywhere. You apply online with your passport and offer letter, the bank opens an investment account and issues deposit instructions, you wire the money from Nepal, and once it lands the bank issues your GIC certificate — the document that goes into your study permit file.

Timeline from application to certificate: two to four weeks when everything cooperates. Plan for four.

The Nepal side: NRB, your bank manager, and the paperwork

Here is the part no Canadian bank website explains. Transferring funds abroad for education from Nepal runs through your commercial bank under Nepal Rastra Bank’s foreign exchange rules. You will need your offer letter, the GIC deposit instructions, your NOC from the Ministry of Education at Keshar Mahal, and your citizenship documents — and the transfer must go through proper banking channels, full stop.

Sit down with your bank manager early, ideally the same week you accept your offer. Ask specifically whether the branch has processed student GIC transfers to Canada before. Branches in Kathmandu and Pokhara do these weekly; a smaller branch elsewhere may be doing its first, and you do not want your deadline to be their learning experience.

If the money comes from an education loan against property — as it does for a large share of our families — the loan must be sanctioned and disbursed before the transfer can move. Sanction letters take time. Property valuations take time. Start that conversation a month earlier than feels necessary.

The mistakes that actually delay visas

Four patterns account for most of the GIC trouble we see.

Sending the wrong amount. Wire the required figure exactly, plus the bank’s stated processing fee, and account for intermediary bank charges — a transfer that lands even slightly short means a second transfer, a second NRB-channel approval, and two lost weeks.

Mismatched names. The name on your GIC application, passport, and remittance paperwork must match to the letter. Nepali documents with inconsistent spellings across citizenship, passport and transcripts cause genuine failures at the Canadian bank’s verification stage. Fix inconsistencies before you apply, not after the wire bounces.

Using informal channels. Every year someone suggests hundi or routing money through a relative abroad to “save on charges”. For a GIC this is not a shortcut, it is a disqualification — the visa officer expects a clean banking trail from Nepal, and its absence raises exactly the source-of-funds doubts that refuse files.

Starting during a festival. GIC transfers initiated in the fortnight before Dashain routinely stall — your branch is short-staffed, approvals queue up, and Canadian deadlines do not observe Nepali holidays. Move the money before the festival season or accept the delay.

A student from Kavre we worked with last winter had done everything right except the sequence: she booked her biometrics before her GIC transfer had cleared, assuming the certificate would arrive “in a few days”. The wire took nineteen. Her file sat incomplete past the college’s document deadline and she came within a week of losing her January seat. It worked out — barely — because the college granted an extension. Sequence beats speed. GIC first, then the rest.

Where the GIC fits in your full file

The GIC covers living costs. It does not cover tuition — visa officers want to see first-year tuition paid or receipted on top of it. Together those two items are the real financial entry ticket to Canada, and they are the reason we push families to look at the total first-year number before falling in love with any particular college. Our Canada page walks through those totals, and the study permit requirements post on this blog covers the rest of the document stack.

One more honest note: we shortlist Canadian institutions per student file rather than from a fixed partner list, because attestation quotas and program eligibility shift by province and intake. The GIC rules, at least, are the same no matter which province you land in.

Before you decide anything expensive

If the GIC Canada process for Nepali students looks manageable on paper but slightly terrifying in practice — that is an accurate reading. The individual steps are simple. The sequencing is where files die.

Start Education has walked more than 4,000 students through their files since 2018, and the counselling costs nothing. Come into Putalisadak, Butwal, Banepa or Ghorahi, or call +977 01-4012658, before you open the GIC account — the order of operations we set in that first free session is usually worth more than any single document.
