Last week a father from Kavre sat across from me at our Putalisadak office and asked one question: “How much, total, before my son earns a single dollar?” He had sold nothing yet. He wanted the number first.
That is the right way to start. Not with university rankings, not with a cousin’s Instagram photos from Texas. With the number, the timeline, and an honest look at whether your file can carry it.
If you plan to study in USA from Nepal, this is the overview we give every family in a first counselling session. The details change — visa rules move, tuition creeps up — so treat every figure here as a starting point, not a promise.
Why the USA, when Australia and Canada exist?
Three reasons keep pulling strong Nepali students towards American universities, and none of them is prestige.
First, funding. No other country hands out graduate assistantships the way US public universities do. A teaching or research assistantship can cut tuition to near zero and pay a monthly stipend on top. Australia almost never does this. Canada rarely does at the master’s level.
Second, the work window after graduation. OPT gives you 12 months of work authorisation, and STEM graduates can extend that to roughly three years in total under current rules. Confirm the current figure before you plan around it — this is exactly the kind of rule that shifts.
Third, breadth. Over 4,000 institutions means there is a genuine fit for a 2.9 GPA student from Pokhara and a 3.9 topper from a Kathmandu +2 alike. The trick is finding it, not forcing yourself into a name your relatives recognise.
The USA is not the right answer for everyone. If your family cannot show roughly NPR 60–80 lakh in accessible funds or loan capacity, and you have no shot at an assistantship, other countries will treat you better. We say this in sessions every week.
The 12–18 month timeline nobody warns you about
This is where most plans to study in USA from Nepal collapse. Students think in weeks. American universities think in seasons.
Count backwards from an August (Fall) intake. Applications for funded master’s programmes close between December and March — eight months before classes start. Before you apply you need IELTS or TOEFL scores, possibly GRE, transcripts from TU, KU or Pokhara University (which can take weeks to issue, longer if Dashain lands in the middle), recommendation letters, and a statement that doesn’t read like a template.
Then the I-20, the SEVIS fee, the DS-160, and an interview slot at the US Embassy at Maharajgunj. Slots tighten badly in May, June and July.
A realistic plan starts 15 months out. Students who walk into our office in April hoping for August of the same year are almost always looking at January instead — and January is a perfectly good intake, with less competition for interview slots and, at some universities, the same funding.
What your file needs
Here is the honest requirements picture, as of early 2026:
- Academics: +2 with reasonable grades for bachelor’s; a completed bachelor’s (three-year TU degrees are accepted by many universities, but not all — check each one) for master’s. Backlogs are explainable; hiding them is not.
- English test: IELTS (roughly 6.5+ for good master’s programmes) or TOEFL. Both have test centres in Kathmandu; book 2–3 weeks ahead in peak season.
- GRE: required by fewer programmes than five years ago, but a strong score still lifts a funding application.
- Money: bank balance, education loan sanction letter, or a mix. Loans against property are common and embassies understand them — if the paperwork is clean.
- NOC: the No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Education at Keshar Mahal, needed before you transfer fees abroad. Straightforward, but budget a few days for it.
Gap years are not a death sentence. A student who worked for two years after a bachelor’s from Butwal has a stronger story than a fresh graduate with nothing on the CV — if the gap is explained honestly on the DS-160 and in the interview.
What it really costs
Numbers first, hedges after. As of early 2026, a public university master’s runs USD 18,000–35,000 per year in tuition. Private universities can double that. Living costs range from USD 800 a month in a small Midwest town to USD 2,000+ in Boston or California.
So an unfunded two-year master’s can total USD 60,000–90,000. That is the number the father from Kavre wanted.
Now the other side. An assistantship changes everything. A student with a tuition waiver and a USD 1,600 monthly stipend might need only USD 10,000–15,000 of family money for the entire degree — mostly the first semester and flights. This is why we push funded applications so hard, and why the 15-month timeline matters. Funding deadlines close early.
Bank managers in Nepal see these files constantly now. Walk in with an admission letter and an I-20 and the education loan conversation is far easier than it was in 2018, when we opened our first office.
January or August?
August (Fall) is the big intake — most funding, most programme choices, most competition for embassy slots. January (Spring) is smaller but real: many of our partner universities, including Wichita State University and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, admit and fund Spring students.
If you are reading this in August or September, January of the following year is tight but possible for unfunded admission. August of next year is the comfortable target. Do not let an agent rush you into a bad intake to close a sale.
Is the USA actually your fit?
A student from Chitwan came to us last year fixed on the USA because his entire friend circle had gone. His IELTS was 6.0, his bachelor’s percentage was modest, and the family’s loan ceiling was NPR 40 lakh. We ran the numbers together in one session. He is now finishing a funded pathway elsewhere and thanked us for the blunt conversation.
The point is not that he failed. The point is that fit is measurable: academics, funds, English, and story. When all four line up, the decision to study in USA from Nepal rewards you like nowhere else. When two of four are weak, the F-1 refusal rate for Nepali applicants — which has been uncomfortably high in recent years — does the deciding for you.
