Australia Student Visa for Nepali Students: GS & Funds

How the subclass 500 Australia student visa works for Nepali students: the Genuine Student requirement, financial evidence, OSHC, and common refusals.

Most visa refusals we review at our Putalisadak office share one flaw. Not weak finances. Not low grades. A story that does not add up.

The subclass 500 — the Australia student visa for Nepali students — is not a document check. It is an argument you are making to a case officer in a processing centre who has read thousands of Nepali files and can smell a template from the first paragraph. Your grades from a KU affiliate, your two-year gap, your uncle’s grocery business funding the tuition: all of it either fits together or it does not.

Here is how the pieces work, and how officers actually read files from Nepal.

What the subclass 500 covers

One visa class covers all study levels, from English language courses to PhDs. It lets you stay for the length of your course plus a buffer, work up to the capped fortnightly hours during term — 48 hours as of early 2026, confirm before relying on it — and bring a spouse or child as dependants in many cases.

The application charge is around A$1,600 as of early 2026, non-refundable even if refused. That number alone should convince you to lodge once, properly, rather than twice cheaply.

You apply online after receiving your Confirmation of Enrolment from the university, which means the university admission and the visa are two separate hurdles. Clearing the first says nothing about the second.

What is the Genuine Student requirement, really?

The GS requirement replaced the old GTE rules and it asks a blunter question: are you primarily coming to study? You answer through a set of targeted questions about your circumstances, your course choice, and what the qualification does for you afterwards.

Officers reading Nepali files look for specific things. Does the course follow logically from your +2 stream or your TU bachelor’s? A science student pivoting to an IT master’s is easy to explain. A management graduate suddenly pursuing community services needs a real reason, written in your own words. Gap years must be accounted for — work, family duties, a failed IELTS attempt, all fine if documented. Silence is what kills files.

They also weigh your ties to Nepal and your family’s economic logic. If the course costs more than your family’s visible assets can sensibly support, the officer starts asking why.

A student from Chitwan came to us after a refusal elsewhere. Strong grades, sufficient funds, rejected anyway — his GS statement was a generic essay about quality education that never once mentioned why that course, that university, that city. We rebuilt it around his actual plan and his family’s poultry business, and the second lodgement was granted. The money had never been the problem.

How much money, and in what form?

Financial capacity means showing you can cover first-year tuition, the declared living cost — around A$29,700 for a single student as of early 2026, and this figure gets revised, so confirm before you lodge — plus travel.

The funds need a history. Money parked in an account for months reads very differently from 40 lakhs deposited the week before lodgement. Education loans from Nepali banks against property are well understood by case officers and often stronger than raw savings, because the paper trail is clean: valuation, sanction letter, disbursement schedule. Sit with your bank manager early — loan processing in Nepal takes weeks, longer around Dashain when everything slows down.

Income sources matter as much as balances. Salaried parents with tax records are straightforward. Agricultural income, remittance from a relative in Korea, rent from a Butwal shophouse — all acceptable, but each needs its own documentation, often through ward-level verification and annexure documents. We cover the full evidence question in our financial documentation sessions, because this is where most Nepali files leak.

And remember the No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Education at Keshar Mahal. It is a Nepal-side requirement, not an Australian one, but you cannot transfer fees without it.

OSHC: the cover you must hold from day one

Overseas Student Health Cover is compulsory for the entire length of your visa, purchased before you lodge. Expect roughly A$600–700 per year for a single student as of early 2026, more for couples.

Do not treat it as a formality. Students who buy the cheapest policy through a random reseller sometimes find the dates do not match their visa length, and a mismatched OSHC certificate is an avoidable reason for a delay or refusal. Buy it through the university or through your counsellor, matched to your Confirmation of Enrolment dates exactly.

Where Nepali applications go wrong

Patterns repeat. In rough order of frequency, the files we see fail because of unexplained recent deposits, GS statements copied from the internet, gap years left blank, a course choice with no connection to anything in the applicant’s history, and sponsor income that exists in reality but not on paper.

None of these are hard to fix — before lodgement. After a refusal, every future application carries that history, and the standard of evidence effectively rises. This is why we tell students that the Australia student visa for Nepali students is won or lost in the preparation month, not the processing month.

One more thing: rules genuinely change. Financial thresholds, work caps, GS question formats — all have shifted in recent years. Anything you read, including this post, is a starting point, not a lodgement checklist. Our Australia page is updated as requirements move.

Before you decide anything expensive

If you are within six months of applying, the cheapest thing you can do is have someone who reads refusal letters for a living look at your file before a case officer does.
