A$29,700. That is the living cost figure a single student must demonstrate for the visa as of early 2026, and it is the number that makes parents in our Banepa branch go quiet.
Then we explain what it actually means, and the room relaxes a little. It is money you must show, not money you hand over. Some of it comes back through part-time work. But the tuition does not come back, the health cover does not come back, and the exchange rate has never once moved in a Nepali family’s favour.
So let us do the arithmetic honestly. The real cost of studying in Australia from Nepal has three layers: what you pay, what you show, and what you spend. Families who confuse the three either over-borrow or under-prepare.
What you pay: tuition by level
Tuition is the immovable cost. As of early 2026, at the universities we work with — Deakin, Macquarie, RMIT, UNSW, UTS, University of Canberra and others — expect these annual bands, and confirm the exact fee on your offer letter because universities revise them yearly:
- Bachelor’s degrees: roughly A$28,000–45,000 per year, with business and IT near the lower-middle and engineering higher
- Master’s by coursework: roughly A$30,000–48,000 per year
- Nursing and health sciences: often A$32,000–40,000, with placement costs sometimes separate
- Vocational and pathway programmes: A$12,000–25,000, a legitimate route we discuss case by case
A Group of Eight university like UNSW or UWA sits at the top of each band. That premium buys ranking and research depth. Whether it buys you a better outcome than a well-chosen course at Deakin or the University of the Sunshine Coast depends entirely on your field — a question worth an hour of counselling, not a guess.
Most universities let you pay per semester, not per year. That halves the upfront transfer, which matters when your money is coming through an education loan disbursed in tranches.
What you show: the visa financial requirement
For the visa file, you demonstrate first-year tuition plus the declared living cost — that A$29,700 figure, which the Department revises periodically, so verify it the week you lodge — plus around A$2,500–3,000 for travel. Add roughly A$600–700 for Overseas Student Health Cover and about A$1,600 for the visa application charge.
Stack it up and a typical file shows A$62,000–78,000 for year one. At exchange rates hovering around 90 rupees to the dollar as of early 2026, that is roughly 56 to 70 lakh rupees on paper.
On paper is the operative phrase. An education loan sanctioned against property counts. Your father’s fixed deposit counts. The point is demonstrable capacity, and a good bank manager plus a clean annexure file gets most middle-class families there. What does not count is money that appeared last Tuesday.
What you spend: Sydney is not Australia
Here is where city choice changes everything. The visa figure is a national benchmark. Your actual monthly spending depends brutally on rent.
In Sydney or Melbourne, a room in a shared flat near a university runs A$250–400 per week as of early 2026. In regional cities — the Sunshine Coast, Darwin, even Perth, which counts as regional for migration purposes — the same room might be A$150–250. Over a three-year bachelor’s, that gap alone is worth more than a year of a sibling’s college fees back home.
Food, transport and phone add perhaps A$400–600 a month if you cook. Nepali students are good at this part. The ones who struggle are the ones who budgeted using the visa figure as a spending plan rather than a legal threshold.
Part-time work at Australian minimum wage — above A$24 per hour as of early 2026 — within the visa’s fortnightly cap typically covers most living costs outside Sydney and Melbourne, and a decent share within them. It will not touch tuition. Any counsellor who tells you otherwise is selling something.
The NPR reality check
A student from Butwal sat with us two years ago, set on Melbourne, until we mapped his family’s total capacity: about 70 lakhs from a loan against their house plus savings. Melbourne would have consumed all of it in eighteen months with no buffer. He took the same course at a regional university instead, spent roughly 40 per cent less on rent, qualified for extra post-study work time, and his family kept a cushion for emergencies. Same degree level. Entirely different risk.
That is the conversation we wish more families had before the first payment. The cost of studying in Australia from Nepal is not one number — it is a set of choices about city, course and level, and the spread between a careless plan and a careful one easily exceeds 20 lakh rupees over a degree.
Two other Nepal-side costs people forget: the No Objection Certificate process at Keshar Mahal before fees can leave the country, and test fees — IELTS and PTE each cost the better part of Rs 30,000 per attempt at Kathmandu centres, and retakes add up. Budget for one retake even if you never need it.
Before you decide anything expensive
Do not fix a budget from blog posts, including this one. Fees change yearly, the living cost figure gets revised, and the rupee does what the rupee does. Confirm every current figure before you lodge anything or sign anything.
