Band 7 in one month. You have seen the hoardings — Putalisadak is wallpapered with them, and so is every chowk in Chitwan and Pokhara. It is the most profitable lie in the education business.
Here is what the hoardings leave out. Most students walking out of +2 with decent NEB English marks sit a diagnostic test and score somewhere around 5.0 to 5.5. The distance from there to a genuine 6.5 is two to three months of daily work. The distance to 7.0 in writing is longer, and no coaching centre can compress it for you.
This is our honest picture of IELTS preparation in Nepal — what score you actually need, where to sit the test in Kathmandu, how long preparation really takes, and which claims to ignore.
What band do you actually need? It depends where you’re going
Stop chasing 7.0 by default. The requirement follows the destination, and the honest ranges as of early 2026 look like this — always confirm with the specific university, because they set their own bars.
For the UK, many universities accept a total band of 6.0 with no section below 5.5, and some run their own English tests that sit even lower. Australia typically wants 6.0 to 6.5 depending on the course; nursing and teaching sit higher. Canada usually asks 6.5 with no band below 6.0 for degree programmes. The USA ranges from 6.5 for ordinary admission to 7.0 and above if you are chasing graduate assistantships. South Korea and Germany are different animals — many programmes there teach in Korean or German, and the English-taught ones generally ask 6.0 to 6.5.
Notice what that list means. A student targeting a UK foundation year and a student targeting a funded American master’s are preparing for two different exams in terms of effort. Know your number before you enrol anywhere.
Computer or paper? Both exist in Kathmandu
You can sit IELTS in Kathmandu through the British Council or IDP, and both now offer computer-delivered tests alongside paper. The exam content is identical. The experience is not.
Computer results arrive in roughly one to five days. Paper takes closer to two weeks. When your application deadline is tight — and Nepali students routinely apply tight — that gap decides which one you book.
Typing matters too. If you write faster than you type, paper protects your writing score. If your handwriting has been ruined by years of rushed TU exam answers, the computer will treat you more kindly. Sit one free mock in each format before you pay. The fee is a little over NPR 31,000 as of early 2026, and it moves — check the centre’s website before booking, and book early, because Kathmandu slots vanish in the pre-Dashain rush every year.
How long does preparation genuinely take?
A student from Dang came to us after her third attempt. Three tests, three sets of fees, and her writing score had not moved from 5.5. She had spent four months memorising “high-scoring” essay templates from YouTube. We rebuilt her preparation around one thing — writing an actual essay every single day and having it corrected — and on the fourth attempt she crossed 6.5. The money she spent on attempts two and three bought nothing.
The pattern behind that story is almost universal. From a typical +2 background, plan on eight to twelve weeks of daily practice to move from 5.5 to 6.5. Listening and reading climb fast because they are skills you can drill alone. Writing and speaking climb slowly because they need correction from someone who knows the band descriptors, and that is the one thing free YouTube playlists cannot give you.
One month is enough only if your diagnostic already sits at 6.0 and you need 6.5. For everyone else, the crash course is a donation to the coaching centre.
Should you consider PTE instead?
Possibly, and more students should ask this question earlier. PTE Academic is computer-scored, results often land within two days, and it is accepted for Australian visas, UK visas, most Canadian institutions, and a growing list of American universities. Test dates in Kathmandu are often easier to find than IELTS slots.
Students who freeze when a human examiner stares at them across a table tend to score better speaking to a microphone. Students with strong ideas but chaotic typing tend to score worse. Neither exam is “easier” in general — one of them is easier for you, and a diagnostic in each will tell you which.
Check one thing before switching: your specific university and visa route must accept PTE. Most do now. Some course-level exceptions remain, especially in health programmes.
The myths that cost students money
No centre can guarantee a band. Examiners do not know or care where you studied. Any institute promising 7.0 is selling confidence, not results.
Memorised essays fail. Examiners in Kathmandu read the same recycled “In this modern era” openings hundreds of times a month, and a memorised answer that misses the actual question caps your score at the bottom bands.
A Medium of Instruction letter is not a free pass. Some universities waive IELTS with an MOI from your TU or KU college, but visa officers weigh English evidence too, and a waived test can weaken a borderline file. Cheap now, expensive later.
And no, British Council IELTS is not marked harder than IDP, or the reverse. Same test, same descriptors, shared question bank. Pick by date and location.
