“Is Perth a village?” A mother from Pokhara asked us that in a counselling session last winter, genuinely worried her son would be studying somewhere with no hospitals and one bus.
Perth has two million people. It also counts as regional Australia for migration purposes, which tells you everything about how misleading the word “regional” is. In Australian policy, regional simply means everywhere outside Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Adelaide is regional. The Gold Coast is regional. Darwin, Canberra’s surrounds, the entire Sunshine Coast — regional.
Once families understand this, the conversation changes, because the way regional Australia benefits international students is concrete and measurable, and most Nepali students never hear about it until after they have committed to Melbourne.
The headline benefit: extra post-study work years
Finish a degree in a metropolitan city and your Temporary Graduate visa gives you a set period of full work rights — typically two years for a bachelor’s as of early 2026, though these settings shift, so confirm before you plan.
Study and then live in a regional area, and you can qualify for an additional one to two years on top, depending on the category of the region. Cities like Perth and Adelaide sit in one category; smaller centres like Darwin sit in another with the longest extensions.
Do the arithmetic. An extra one or two years of full-time work at Australian graduate salaries is worth tens of thousands of dollars — often more than an entire year’s tuition. For a family repaying an education loan against property in Nepal, those extra years are frequently the difference between the loan clearing comfortably and the loan lingering.
Migration points, for those thinking further ahead
We do not counsel students to study purely for migration — the Genuine Student requirement exists precisely to filter that, and your visa file must stand on academic logic. But it would be dishonest to pretend the points do not exist.
Skilled migration in Australia runs on a points test, and studying in a regional area earns extra points that metropolitan graduates do not get, as of early 2026. Regional graduates also access state nomination programmes and visa subclasses that are simply unavailable to Sydney graduates. Several of the students we placed between 2018 and 2021 are now permanent residents, and the regional route featured in a clear majority of those files.
Rules in this space change more often than any other. Treat the current points settings as a snapshot, and verify everything against the year you graduate, not the year you apply.
The benefit nobody advertises: your monthly budget
Rent is the largest expense in any student’s life, and the gap is not subtle. A room in a shared flat near a Sydney university costs A$250–400 per week as of early 2026. On the Sunshine Coast or in Darwin, comparable rooms run A$150–250. Over a three-year degree, the saving reaches A$15,000–20,000 — real money, not brochure money.
Part-time work is often easier to find, too. In Sydney, you compete with tens of thousands of students for the same hospitality shifts. In regional cities, employers in aged care, retail and hospitality are frequently short-staffed. Several of our students report better hours and better hourly treatment outside the big cities.
The trade-off is real and we name it plainly: fewer Nepali restaurants, a smaller Nepali community, quieter weekends. Some students thrive on that. Others feel it hard, especially around Dashain when the homesickness peaks and there is no big gathering to absorb it. Know yourself before you choose.
Which of our partner universities count?
Three of our Australian partners sit squarely in regional classifications as of early 2026 — confirm the current category list before you apply, because the boundaries have been redrawn before:
- University of the Sunshine Coast — strong in nursing, health and business, an hour from Brisbane
- Charles Darwin University — Darwin campus, the most generous regional category, genuine local demand for graduates
- University of Western Australia — a Group of Eight research university in Perth, which counts as regional despite being a genuine major city

Deakin also operates campuses outside central Melbourne, which is worth a specific conversation if you want the brand with a quieter setting.
Who should still pick Sydney or Melbourne?
Honesty cuts both ways. If your field is investment banking, management consulting or big-tech software, the employers cluster in Sydney and Melbourne, and proximity to internships matters more than visa arithmetic. If your course is offered at a clearly stronger department in a metropolitan university, take the stronger department.
But for nursing, teaching, social work, accounting, hospitality and most engineering — fields where registration and experience outweigh brand — the regional route usually wins on total outcome.
A student from Butwal we placed a few years back had offers from a Melbourne university and Charles Darwin for the same IT master’s. His family’s entire budget was 65 lakhs against their house. Darwin cost him roughly 35 per cent less in living expenses, and the extra post-study work period meant he was still earning Australian wages while his Melbourne-offer alternative self would have been packing up. He cleared the family loan in under three years.
